ARC-VOP previously had breeding programs that focused specifically on various seed propagated vegetables.  Breeder's seed for cultivars released from these programs as well as selected advanced breeding lines continue to be maintained as collections.  The genebank also produced onion seed for private breeding programs that are utilising ARC cultivars under contract.  The collection also includes virus-free garlic that are intended for release to the Garlic Growers Association.  The gross value of local produced garlic is just over R25 million.  Furthermore, there is a big scope to expand the industry as over 1 000 tons of garlic were imported in 2009.  This genebank currently contains 77 accessions, comprising breeder's seed of ten vegetable genera (Beta vulgaris, Brassica oleracea var capitata, Daucus carota, Phaseolus vulgaris, Citrillus lanatus, Allium cepa, Cucurbita, Pisum sativum, Cucurbita pepo, Cucurbita maxima and Lycopersicon lycopersicum), as well as seed from various tomato, onion and other vegetable breeding lines.
