The Plant Protection Unit of ARC Infruitec-Nietvoorbij was established in 2004 by the amalgamation of the Pest Management and Disease Management Units. This enabled the personnel and infrastructure to be more effectively and efficiently utilized. The aim of the Unit is to do research on topics of national importance related to the deciduous fruit, grape and wine industries with special emphasis on developing integrated pest and disease management systems. Alternative crop diseases and pests such as olives and fynbos are also researched.

SERVICES Plant Protection renders a diagnostic service to all fruit, vine and fynbos producers. The service includes identification of insect pests and diseases. Diseases such as Petri disease, Black foot and wood rotting of grapevines are identified through destructive analysis of the plant. Soil and root analysis for the presence of root rotting fungi on all fruit crops as well as on fynbos can be done. Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) is used for identification of Bacterial Blight and Aster Yellows. Visual identifications of virus diseases can also be done.
