Construction of silt fences at the Mabula Game Lode, Limpopo Province

Soil erosion has, and will always be a big problem in South Africa. To help combat this problem the Institute has designed and constructed silt fences consisting of low cost materials.

Some 20 different drop inlet and weir type structures has been erected by making use of different and easily obtainable materials. The test on these structures produced outstanding results.

By making use of these methods, the further erosion in small and medium size dongas can be halted and silt deposits created for vegetation.
