The program focuses on:

  • Identify and name plants

  • Collect plants to fill the gaps in distribution data of southern African plants

  • Produce plant information to help managers, conservationists, government and the public to make decisions.

  • Provide herbarium-training course for students, researchers and the public.

Plant Voucher Specimen Collection and Vegetation Database

The plant specimen collection and vegetation database of the ARC- AP provides a stable, long‐term digital storage facility for vegetation data in South Africa. It is particularly important for management and conservation in regions with exceptional floristic diversity that databases are developed that are designed to store information on occurrence and co-occurrence of plant taxa, and on vegetation characteristics of the region. For instance, sufficiently comprehensive vegetation databases allow identification of ecological indicator species or species groups to assist in environmental assessment and monitoring, and extraction of species-diversity patterns for developing conservation targets. The ARC-AP Roodeplaat herbarium is hosting a growing collection (± 6000) of data in the form of specimen collections and vegetation survey plots. Most specimens are from southern Africa.
