INTEGRATED REGISTRATION AND GENETIC INFORMATION SYSTEM (INTERGIS)
Recording of breeder and animal production & performance data on the National Animal Database |
The INTERGIS 2000 system is a collection of databases and programs that addresses the animal recording needs of a broad spectrum of role players in the livestock industry, from breeders and owners of purebred and commercial animals to registration authorities and related industry organisations. The Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development (DALRRD) has contracted the ARC to host the INTERGIS, which includes the National Animal Database of South Africa. The INTERGIS is ICAR approved and forms the backbone of the animal production industry in South Africa with an unbiased approach, and complies with the Animal Improvement Act, 1998 (Act No. 62 of 1998) which ensures the integrity of the country's animal pedigree and performance data with its main objective of 'animal improvement'.
In addition to hosting the National Animal Database, it also includes the INTERGIS interface that runs on web-based software that provides the various users with a structured, user-friendly and seamless interface.
The INTERGIS also forms the basis of the performance schemes that use it as their source.
OBJECTIVE:
The primary purpose of the INTERGIS is to enable stakeholders to upload production and performance data of animals, as well as herd information, to the National Animal Database which is converted into useful management information available in the form of reports and query facilities.
RECORDING AND REGISTRATION SERVICES:
Recording of breeders and their herds on the national animal database. This includes stud, commercial and small-scale farmers. All prefixes and herd designation marks across the country must be registered on the INTERGIS, which is checked to prevent duplicates and comply with regulatory requirements (Application for membership).
Recording of animals, linking and maintenance of all related information during the animal's lifetime. All data is validated before being accepted on the national database. Formats for 'data sent from Intergis 2000' and 'data sent to INTERGIS' is contained in the
Electronic Data Handling (EDH) document.
Validate the data in accordance with the breed limits and mating tables as contained in the constitution of each breeders' association in the case of stud breeding as well as the requirements set out for the relevant performance scheme.
Generate certificates and related reports.
FEATURES:
An INTERGIS user interface to capture data, query and extract reports that may be downloaded in .pdf, .csv and .zip file formats.
Data can be submitted
electronically or on a hard copy to the INTERGIS.
Farm management software can be used to exchange data directly with the system through the user interface.
Estimated breeding values are stored in the database and are reflected on selected reports.
Data extraction for research purposes.
Statistics are derived from the National Animal Database.
